October is cybersecurity awareness month. On Friday, October 11th Central Michigan University will spend the day focusing on ways people can protect themselves before heading online.

Experts said between phones, tablets, and computers there are many devices we use everyday that could be vulnerable to cyber frauds.

Between online banking, ordering online, and updating statuses, officials say your personal information is available - possibly to the wrong people.

Business Information Systems Professor, Dr. Susan Helser, said people will use online channels to get access to your personal information.

“They wanted your personally identifiable information, why? Well they go out and they take credit cards in your name, or they buy a house in your name, or get a mortgage in your name and that creates problems because you don’t even know about that loan existing.”

Dr. Helser said the best way to be vigilant with your cybersecurity is simple: “don’t trust strangers.” She said you should always question new offers, links, or websites before clicking on anything to protect your information

The conference will start with a cybersecurity panel at 9AM followed by a meet and greet. In the afternoon, there will also be a cybersecurity capture the flag event where teams have the opportunity to learn more skills. To learn more, click here
