University free speech legislation moves forward

Controversial legislation to require specific free speech policies on Michigan college and university campuses is moving forward.

It would require colleges and universities to have policies that allow students and faculty to discuss anything.  It would also require that campuses be open to any speaker invited by students or faculty members.

The bill is in response to past events where liberal student groups disrupted speeches by far-right speakers.

Republican State Representative John Reilly is the bill’s sponsor.   Reilly says other lawmakers could try to modify the bill

“They may make changes, that’s always a possibility there may be changes coming.  I don’t expect a bill that’s a controversial as this not to have possible changes coming down the road.”]

Groups representing Michigan’s state universities and community colleges oppose the bill.
