EMU opens new athletic facility, still needs money

This fall, student athletes at Eastern Michigan University have a new twenty-million dollar facility.

EMU is still looking for donors to pay for it.

At a ribbon cutting ceremony this week,  Board of Regents chair James Webb stood in front of supporters and big donors to say ‘thank you’

This is being built completely with donor dollars. We’re not taking anything from the general fund.

Problem is, that’s just not true. Eight million dollars will come out of the general fund.

So far, E-M-U’s athletic department has raised only half of the twelve million dollars it’s on the hook for. A school spokesman says they’re committed to raising the money but isn’t aware of any deadline to do that.

Eastern has faced scrutiny for athletics spending in recent years.
