The convention center formerly known as Cobo Hall has a new name.

It will now be called “T-C-F Center.”  A deal ensures that Detroit-based T-C-F Bank holds the building’s naming rights for the next 22 years.  Gary Torgow is Executive Chairman of the bank.

“Today a name from the past comes down from these walls and we proudly and honorably replace it with a name that stands for community and inclusion and a powerful future for everyone who is associated with it.”

The convention center was originally named after former Detroit mayor Alfred Cobo when it opened in 1960.  He died in office in 1957.  During his time in office Cobo is widely viewed to have passed oppressive housing laws that escalated racial tensions ahead of the Detroit’s 1967 riot.
