Lake Erie is experiencing a large algal bloom that can be toxic to those who come in contact with it. The Michigan Department of Environment…Great Lakes and Energy says it is peak season for the cyanobacteria because of warm weather and rainfall. Spokesperson Hugh McDiarmid  says as of August 13th...the bloom covered 620 square miles…which is eight times the size of Cleveland.

“Cyanobacteria is a natural part of the lake but it can break down and create cyanotoxins which can be dangerous to humans and to animals if they come in contact and/or swallow the water that contains them.” :15

McDiarmid warns that there is no way to distinguish safe bacteria and toxins by sight alone. He says residents should avoid scummy water and be aware that algae can appear in a range of colors from green or blue…to white or brown.
