Judge rules against LTBB reservation boundaries

A federal judge has ruled against the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians' lawsuit seeking to affirm their reservation boundaries.

The tribe sued the state in 2016, arguing that the Treaty of 1855 established a more than 300-square-mile reservation for them on lands including the cities of Petoskey, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs.

Affirming the reservation would not have given the tribe ownership of the land. The tribe said it wanted more legal jurisdiction over tribal citizens within the boundaries.

But the summary judgement says the Treaty "cannot plausibly be read to create an Indian reservation."

Tribal chairwoman Regina Gasco-Bentley said the tribe is considering its legal options. I'm Kaye LaFond.
