Detroit officials are trying to push residents to the head of the line for thousands of new jobs being created in the city by Fiat Chrysler.

The automaker is building a new production facility and re-configuring its current Jefferson North plant, a project Fiat Chrysler estimates will create about five thousand new jobs.  The automaker has pledged to give Detroiters first crack at those jobs…if they have the skills necessary to do them. Now the city’s Detroit at Work program is offering residents the chance to pre-register for training sessions necessary to gain some of those skills.

The pre-registration officially begins next week.

Members of the Detroit City Council say Fiat Chrysler does not have any legal obligation to hire residents.

But Council Members say they will be monitoring the situation closely to see if the automaker makes good on what it promised during negotiations.
