Mid-Michigan Shelters preparing to “empty the shelter”

Some Mid-Michigan shelters are taking part in a nation-wide adoption day next month. These kinds of events take place throughout the year, because shelters say… they work.

Pet adoption fees can range anywhere from 60 dollars to 200 dollars. On May 4th, the Bissell Pet Foundation will cover the lion’s share of the adoption fee. So for 25 dollars, people will be able to adopt pets from participating animal shelters.

Kyle Musselman is the Executive Director of the Missaukee Humane Society. He says this year they are trying to break their own adoption record.

“Our record to beat is 42 adoptions in one day. With that we are able to bring in other animals from other animals from other shelters that may be on the euthanasia list or from overcrowded shelters we are able to adopt these ones out to good homes.”

Musselman said on these pet adoption days animals go fast. He said the best way to ensure you get a pet is to apply before “Empty the Shelter” day.

“We do ask people if they are interested in animal they get that application in beforehand so staff can review that and get them approved because we can’t hold a pet for anybody.”

Animal shelters across the state are taking part in “Empty the Shelter” day. A map of participating locations is available here.
