A new report said Michigan motorists will have to pay hundreds of dollars in vehicle maintenance and repair costs.

The report said 44 percent of Michigan roads are in poor or mediocre condition.

It said there are many roads in need of repair that will not be fixed due to lack of sufficient funds.

Carolyn Kelly is with the research group TRIP, which authored the report. She said roads will only cost more as time goes by.

“It’s much more cost effective to repair roads when they begin to deteriorate rather than waiting until they have completely disintegrated and require a full rebuild. The longer those repairs are delayed the more expensive they become.”

Until those road repairs can be made, Michigan motorists will have to pay $600 per year on vehicle maintenance and repair costs.

The report also said current roadways are the cause of approximately one third of all fatal traffic crashes.

Kelly said improving road conditions and other safety features on Michigan could lead to a “more forgiving” driving environment which may decrease the number of fatal crashes.
