As part of his budget proposal announced Monday, President Trump wants to slash funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

It includes over 4,000 projects aimed at protecting and restoring the health of the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative span over nine states… and include things like keeping invasive Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes and monitoring P-FAS levels in drinking water.

But President Trump wants to cut funding for them from about $300 million to $30 million.

Howard Lerner is the Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center.

He says the GLRI has wide legislative support.

“This is where we live, where we work, and where we play… the support for the Great Lakes is bipartisan… it’s actually non-partisan.”

This is the third year in a row that President Trump has proposed a big cut to the GLRI’s budget.

Congress has restored most of the funding each year.
