Michigan officials are temporarily allowing residents to collect wood on state lands without a permit.

After the recent week of extreme temperatures, Michigan is allowing people to collect wood from state managed forest lands and game areas to heat their homes.

Normally people are only allowed to collect wood with a permit from April to December.

David Price is a spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

“With the extreme temperatures we’ve had through the state not only this past week and through this coming weekend until it warms up. So it was just an idea to help those individuals who burn wood to primarily heat their homes.”

People will be able to collect wood until Sunday.
