The Library of Michigan has announced its Notable Book List for 2019. The list contains 20 Michigan books published in 2018.

If your New Year’s resolution had something to do with picking up more books in 2019, the Library of Michigan is here to help. They just released their annual list of 20 recently published books, telling stories that either take place in, was written by an author from Michigan.

Tim Gleisner is the Head Librarian of Special Collections for the state. He said the process of compiling the list takes several months and many minds.

“There’s a committee that starts meeting in about August, it’s made up of about twelve to thirteen people from around the state, librarians, academics, booksellers,” he said, “And then the committee, up until about December, judges the books based on various criteria, and we decide which ones we think are notable for those considerations.”

Gleisner said the list helps foster a sense of pride in the art Michigan produces.

“In this time that we talk about a literacy crisis, it’s good to know that there is this body of people who are writing and contributing, not only to the culture but also to celebrate the literature of our place.”

He said, from Detroit to the U.P., the books come from all across the state. The list spans many genres and vary in levels of difficulty, so even younger readers can enjoy books from the place they call home.
