Northern Michigan’s CS Lewis festival celebrates 17th year

CS Lewis

Northern Michigan’s celebration of the man who created Narnia kicks off Thursday in Petoskey.

The C.S. Lewis festival is in its 17th year commemorating the British writer with events centered around arts, education, and faith.

David Crouse, co-founder of the festival said Lewis’ popularity has remained strong because of his articulation of faith.

“He’s able to distill the Christian message in a way that very few authors have been able to do. And not only that but in a contemporary fashion that has lasted for many many decades and will continue to last well into the next century I’m convinced.”

Crouse said this year the festival will be attended by two Lewis scholars, Malcolm Guite of Cambridge and Michael Ward of Oxford.

He said after 16 years the festival is still going strong.

“I’m still amazed, every year we average over 1,000 people that attend a number of different events.”

Crouse said the Petoskey festival is the only month-long festival celebrating CS Lewis in the world.
