The Michigan Secretary of State is reminding drivers to move over for first responders.
Michigan drivers are required by law to switch to opposite lanes when passing an emergency responder on the side of the road. The ‘Move Over’ law went into effect in 2001.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said the primary cause of national law enforcement deaths is due to traffic incidents.
“Six to eight fire and rescue emergency medical service personnel are killed because of moving traffic and not getting over lanes, ten to twelve police officers every year, and tow operators-one person killed on average every six days.”
Johnson said tow truck drivers are first responders and are included under the law’s provisions.
