The wreckage of a plane that went missing in 1997 has been located in St. Ignace.

Pilot Mark Davies and his wife Janet were flying from Drummond Island to Howell when their small Piper aircraft went down near the Upper Peninsula. Drummond Island is a remote island in Lake Huron.

A four-day search following the incident was unable to locate the plane.

Eric Weiss (wice) is a spokesperson with the National Transportation Safety Board. He said poor weather may have played a factor in the crash.

“It was instrument meteorological conditions. So you’d be flying on instruments. There was a report that the weather went down to 200 feet overcast, which is pretty low ceiling.”

Weiss said the couple did not submit a flight plan before departure. He says the National Transportation Safety Board is working to provide the exact location for where the plane was found.
