Historic Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse to undergo renovations

The second oldest lighthouse on Lake Huron is scheduled to undergo repairs this summer.  Funding comes from a $60,000 grant from the “Save our Lights” fundraising campaign.

Community and state support to save the Thunder Bay Island lighthouse raised $90,000 to replace the rotten, leaking roof.

Project leaders said the work is necessary to ensure the light stands for another century.

Don June is the project manager. He said they’re replacing all the underlayment and fastening on new historically accurate 1906 metal shingles.

“We discovered back in 1990 that the roof needed some repair then. We've held off for many years. Fifteen years it’s lasted but it’s under dire need now to replace”.

June said project plans also include repainting all the metal railing and ladders.
