A floating museum in northern Michigan will be getting an update thanks to a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The 300 thousand dollar grant will help give a facelift to the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum in Mackinaw City.

Lisa Pallagi is the museum’s executive director.

“From top to bottom, stem to stern, we will have the ship completely blasted, primed, and painted and that work will be done by Seaway Painting who is the company that paints the Mackinac Bridge.”

Pallagi said the goal is to complete the renovations by the time the museum reopens in the spring, but some work could extend into the summer.

“We’ve painted it before but honestly it was just kind of a patchwork job it was just a quick coat of paint you know it was all we could afford but that was still 30,000 dollars and that was only to paint the hull, it wasn’t to paint anything else.”

Pallagi said the museum is about 100-thousand dollars shy of covering all the costs associated with the renovation, so they’re looking for donations to help with the project.
