US-2 in UP is Michigan’s newest Pure Michigan byway.

MDOT

US-2 in Michigan’s upper peninsula is now the newest Pure Michigan Byway.

A 92 mile section of the road that runs along the northern shore of Lake Michigan became the state’s 21st byway on Friday.

The road moves through scenic lakeshores, dunes, bridges, and camping areas.

Dan Weingarten is a communications representative for the Michigan Department of Transportation. He said byways are special roadways designated by the state.

“That was a way for people in different parts of the state to come together to label a highway in their area as a historic, scenic, or recreational highway, and they would get special signs that would indicate that the highway had some of those features.”

Weingarten said byways constitute 1100 miles of Michigan’s highways.

Individuals and organizations can send in applications if there is a Michigan road that should be considered as a Pure Michigan byway.
