Nestle has been requested to submit updated data by the end of August on the environmental impact of its proposed increase to water withdrawal in Osceola County.

Last year Nestle submitted an application for a permit to increase its water withdrawal in Osceola County from 250 gallons a minute to 400 gallons per minute.

Melody Kindraka is a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. She said when looking over the application, officials from the MDEQ felt the environmental impact data wasn’t accurate.

“So at the end of June we sent a letter to Nestle asking that they go back to their consultants and experts and perform some additional analysis and provide that to us.”

Kindraka said the application failed to provide enough information about the potential impact on streams and wetland in Osceola County.

“We feel that the groundwater model they provided is a little out of date and we want to see an updated one.”

Kindraka said the department will use the permit and the over 80-thousand public comments to help them make a decision.

In a written statement officials with Nestle said they are confident their water withdrawal permit is environmentally sustainable.
