Gaylord man sets off on 4,000 mile bike ride

Joe Wambold

Riding a bicycle across the country - four thousand miles - is the goal for one 63 year old Michigan man who plans to leave this weekend.

“My name is Joe Wambold I live in Gaylord Michigan I grew up in Traverse City and life's been good. It really has. I feel blessed that I have the opportunity and the resources to go out on the road and Sweet Janine, my wife, says go ahead Joe, I think I can be without you for four months here sewing”.

Joe Wambold tells people he biked across America three years ago but his friends say Oregon to Michigan isn’t all the way across the country. He’s conceded quote “That’s true, so I’ve got to finish it off”.

Wambold said he’s making the trip not only lose a few pounds but also for the love of biking and meeting new people.  He relies on ‘new people’ when it comes time for him to find a place to stay for the night.

“Couch Surfing and Warm Showers they’re both websites. You just go on their website and it has a huge map and you go to a city where you’ll be stopping you find just a bunch of names, they have profiles on their website and you pick out somebody you think you might have interests with. Then you call them up or email them, and hopefully you can stay with them”.

Wambold said without dinners, hot showers and good conversation from strangers the trip wouldn't be possible.
