Representatives from Consumers Energy are in the process of restoring power to some 156 thousand homes and businesses impacted by high winds across the state Thursday night.

The storms hit ten Michigan counties, including Ogemaw and Roscommon, and knocked over roughly 200 power lines, leaving many without power.

Katie Carey is with Consumers Energy. She said the winds were unusually high.

“We saw several rounds of thunderstorms roll across the state late Thursday night and really early into Friday. Some of those winds were approaching 70 miles an hour in the Northern part of the state and we even clocked some winds at 90 miles an hour over on the lakeshore.”

Carey encourage residents to stay safe.

“The length of the wind and the high milage per hour there were a lot of damage to trees and power lines. We would encourage everyone to be safe and be careful if you’re driving throughout your community. Just be careful and stay away from downed wires.”

Carey said Consumers hopes to have power back on for all of their customers by Sunday afternoon.
