Developing better local support services for victims of crime is the aim 15 million dollars in federal grants.

The grants are being offered through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and will focus on counseling and housing services for victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking.

Jennifer Eisner is with the MDHHS. She said organizations will be awarded up to one million dollars.

“This money is available to organizations around our state that help crime victims. They respond to the immediate needs of crime victims reducing psychological consequences of victimization and helping restore a sense of dignity and self esteem for these individuals.”

Eisner said the grants will prioritize underserved communities.

“The services that we’re looking for in helping crime victims will include transitional support and housing services, organizations that address human trafficking and other victims of crime, and especially organizations that serve priority and underserved areas of our state.”

The grants are being offered to organizations applying for the first time and to American Indian Tribes.

The proposal period closes on July 27.
