Alpena County Fair introduces Handi-Capable Day this year

The Alpena County Fair is trying something new this year, and it benefits people with disabilities.

The fair is introducing what it’s calling Handi-Capable Day.

Darlene Alexander is the Alpena County Fair board Secretary, and Treasurer of the Alpena County Horsemen’s club, which is sponsoring the event.

“The gate will be open to handicapped children, adults, and their caregivers to come in free and ride the rides. We will not let anybody else in, it will be just strictly for that. And the carnival company has agreed to work with us and they’ve done this before.”

Alexander said in past years the fair has hosted events where children could ride for free, but this year decided to do something different.

“What I plan on doing is talking to the different homes and with Community Mental Health. We will be sending out free tickets to the people that they recommend would be you know willing to come or wanting to come and then they will have the ticket to come in, and they will get in free.”

The Handi-Capable event is scheduled from 10am to noon on August 2nd at the Alpena County Fair.

The Alpena County Fair runs July 29th to August 5th.
