Criminal justice reform groups call the lack of adequate response to the pandemic in Michigan prisons "cruel and inhumane."

More than 62-percent of inmates have tested positive for COVID-19 so far during the pandemic. 138 have died.

Tony Gant is with Nation Outside.  It's a group that advocates for incarcerated people.

He says the physical makeup of prisons makes social distancing impossible.  So, inmates can't protect themselves from infection.

“And the fact that they have not reduced the population makes the problem worse.”

A spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections says state law does not allow for early release of prisoners.
