Michigan Homeless Can Get COVID-19 vaccine

Starting Monday, those experiencing homelessness in Michigan are eligible to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Over the past year, homeless shelters have had to adapt new limitations to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now, access to the coronavirus vaccine for those experiencing homelessness is expected to make it easier to protect this particularly vulnerable population.

Linda Vail is the health officer for Ingham County. She says the county is partnering with shelters to provide vaccinations.

“It's not going to be a matter of scheduling an appointment at the pavilion or the white Ridge, where we've done some clinics or at our own human service building where we’ve done clinics, it's a matter of having to get out into the community to people.”

Vail says vaccination clinics and outreach programs within homeless shelters could begin as early as this week.
