Ongoing EPA cleanup at St. Louis site finds more toxic materials than expected

The Environmental Protection Agency says it has cleaned some 100-thousand pounds of environmental waste from a Gratiot county superfund site, with no end in sight.

EPA cleanup at the former Velsicol Chemical Company site in St Louis began in 1998 and some residents say it may still be another two decades before it is complete.

Jane Keon is the chairperson of the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force. She said the EPA expected to bring up four truckloads of highly toxic materials but have already removed about eight.

“Our community group is very happy that it is coming up. We suspected there was lots more underground than was projected by EPA. They are finding that out too.”

Keon said the EPA has said the project will take roughly seven more years to complete but she finds that doubtful.

The EPA is currently cleaning up acre two of the 52-acre superfund site.

The project costs about one million dollars a month.
