Saginaw mayor establishes travel restrictions to curb “irresponsible” gatherings

The city of Saginaw has set travel restrictions on county and local roads within the city between 9 PM until 6 AM every day.

The Mayor says the city does not have the power to issue a curfew ordinance like the one which began earlier this month in Flint.

Mayor Floyd Kloc says the travel restrictions are intended to curb public gatherings. He said he’s instituted the restrictions because people don’t seem to be taking the Governor’s stay at home order seriously.

“At least we’re hoping to curb some of these excessive and clearly irresponsible gatherings that have been happening.”

The Mayor said violations of the restrictions could see residents hit with fines.

“This would have a fine of up to 500 dollars as a civil infraction. This is an additional imposition of fines that will hopefully deter people.”

Kloc said the number of Covid cases in Saginaw have begun to increase and people need to take the stay at home orders seriously.

The restrictions will be in place for seven days after which Kloc said he hopes the City Council will extend them.

Essential workers and essential travel are not restricted under the order.
