Coronavirus is disrupting travel around the world… now college students are trying to figure out their next steps after travel abroad programs are cancelled.
This week, Central Michigan University cancelled all study abroad trips for the spring semester. The university also called students home from trips in China, South Korea, and Italy. Students returning from those countries are being directed to self-quarantine for 14 days.
CMU junior Katie Snowwhite was studying in Italy. She said an email is the only thing enforcing her quarantine.
"“The email was basically: we suggest that you self-quarantine for 14 days, but at the very least you cannot show up on our facilities for 14 days. It was basically just don’t come onto campus and we should be monitoring our systems in case we develop any.”
Snowwhite said all of her classes will be conducted online for the remainder of the semester. She said the university hasn’t communicated whether or not she will be reimbursed for her travel expenses.
The university said it is working on a case by case basis to determine how or if students will be reimbursed for their travel costs.
