The state is holding public hearings this month on new, stricter rules for PFAS chemicals in drinking water.
PFAs, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are a family of chemicals that are linked to health problems including cancer.
The public hearings will focus on proposed rules that would reduce exposure to seven different PFAs compounds found in drinking water. The state will set drinking water standards, sampling requirements, and public notification requirements.
Scott Dean is with the department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy. He said they are looking for public comments to address concerns about the proposed rules.
“These draft rules, if adopted, could create some of the most stringent and most comprehensive rules for PFAs and drinking water in the state of Michigan.”
Dean said EGLE will host hearings over the next two weeks in Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, and Roscommon.
Officials will also take comments by mail and email until January 31st. He said he hopes to see the final rules in place in the spring.
