Researchers have created a formula to combat invasive plants and animals through work done on Beaver Island.
They said getting rid of invasives is a tricky business because there are a number of factors at play.
Beaver Island resident, Pam Grassmick, started an invasive species educational campaign on the island. She said you need to have the five rights before you move an invasive:
“You make sure you have the right plant, you’re treating it at the right time of the year, using the right dose, the right herbicide, and the right method.”
Grassmick said education is a key step before combatting invasives. She said learning more about invasive’s biology is the best way to plan the attack and clear them out for good.
Grassmick said education has already changed the local ecology on Beaver Island and across the Midwest.
“Many of our seasonal residents take what they’ve learned over the summer and bring it back to their communities, whether it is in Wisconsin, Ohio, or Indiana.”
