A blizzard in the Upper Peninsula has closed schools and roads and caused power outages to thousands of customers.

The National Weather Service says a foot and a half of snow fell in some parts of Marquette County over the weekend.

Meteorologist Jonathan Voss says high winds moved in yesterday afternoon, causing whiteout conditions across the region.

“We’re getting wind reports over across the Keweenaw exceeding 65 miles an hour at both the Houghton County Airport and Copper Harbor.”

Police are asking residents to stay off of streets so plows can get through.

The NWS Marquette office has recorded 202.2 inches of snow this winter.  87.3 inches of that fell this month alone.
