State officials have issued a “do not eat” deer advisory in Iosco County.

The advisory comes after a study found Perfluoroalkyl Substances, also known as PFAS, in deer.

PFAS have been linked to many health problems in humans including cancer.

According to the study, almost all deer in Iosco County had low levels of PFAS. One deer found in Clark’s Marsh in Oscoda Township showed elevated levels of the chemical.

Officials said that deer found within five miles of Clark’s Marsh should not be eaten. They also say all deer kidneys and livers should be avoided because they accumulate chemicals.

At this time, officials don’t know how deers are exposed to PFAS but plan to continue investigating the wildlife.
