The Michigan Nurses Association has donated funds to cancel nearly 9 million dollars in medical debt for families across 40 Michigan counties.

The association paired up with RIP Medical Debt, a New York-based organization that purchases and cancels medical debts.

The announcement was made at a candlelight vigil in Traverse City by registered nurses at the Munson Medical Center. Munson Medical nurses are still in the process of contract negotiations with the hospital.

Melissa Boals is a registered nurse at Munson Medical Center and a member of the Michigan Nurses Association.

“Munson nurses wanted to thank the community for all the support they’ve given us during our campaign, during our negotiations.”

Boals said the beneficiaries of their donation will remain anonymous - but over nine thousand families and individuals were helped.
