Food pantry for university students in need

Central Michigan University’s Student Food Pantry will hold its first distribution tomorrow.

The food pantry is open to CMU students who are experiencing food insecurity.

Kourtney Koch is a graduate assistant who works with the pantry. She said it appears the need at CMU mirrors that at the national level.

“That range anywhere from 34 to 45 percent of students at a four year institution that may be experiencing food insecurity,” she said. “So we’ve done some preliminary research at CMU and we’ve found that to be true here as well.”

Koch said the pantry expects over 100 students for the first distribution.

“Over this winter break, the CMU Student Food Pantry won’t be open, but we are working Community Compassion Network in Mount Pleasant,” she said. “Any student who comes to the first or second distribution who would like access to food over break can go to the Community Compassion Network.”

The second will be on Dec. 11.

The distributions will start at 6 pm until 8 pm at the Student Food Pantry’s location under the Robinson Residential Restaurant on the campus of CMU.
