Four cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis, a Polio-like illness, are being investigated in Michigan by the Centers for Disease Control.
State health officials say the four cases are part of 155 currently being investigated by the CDC, which began tracking the disease in 2014.
Lynn Sutfin is with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. She said the illness is rare and not a lot is known about it.
“It’s not believed to be contagious and it's a really rare complication that follows a rare viral infection.”
Sutfin said the symptoms include sudden muscle weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, facial droop, and slurring of speech.
She said the cases appear to increase around September and October - but it’s not known why.
