A power company announced on Wednesday that it plans to invest 250 million dollars into a solar project in Shiawassee County.

The project is headed by Ranger Power, a New York-based solar company.

Justin Horvath is with the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership. He said they are working through the approval process right now

“The company has just submitted their paperwork to the county for the special use permit to build the solar farm that’s required at the local level to build the farm.”

Horvath said the solar energy could be used by energy companies who need to increase their use of green energy - or it could be used directly by local industry.

“Probably most importantly there’s a good electrical interconnection right by the property. So basically not only do you need to generate the power you need to feed it into the grid, you need to plug in. This is right by that.”

Horvath said the investment could bring as many as 300 construction jobs to the area.

He said construction on the solar farm is expected to begin in 2019.
