Park Service pauses wolf relocation to Isle Royale for the year

National Park Service/Jim Peaco

After bringing four wolves to Isle Royale as part of its wolf relocation effort the National Park Service announced it is done for the year.

All four of the wolves brought to the Island came from Minnesota.

The relocation effort is part of the Park Service’s plan to bring a stable wolf population back to the island.

Liz Valencia is with the Park Service. She said tracking collars have been placed on all four of the animals.

“Other than seeing where they are moving around we won’t really know how they are doing as far as pack formation or anything like that until winter study happens.”

Valencia says the park service will study how the wolves are integrating to the island beginning in January. The park will also restart wolf relocation in January.

“We’d like to get four more this winter if we could. We’re looking at potentially getting wolves from Canada from the province of Ontario. We’ve started looking into that possibility.”

Eventually, Valencia said, they hope to relocate wolves from other areas of Michigan as well.

The Park Service hopes to bring 20 total wolves to the island within the next five years.
