Break out the vine grown tomatoes and fresh picked lettuce...this is National Farmers Market Week.

Officials said although farmers throughout much of Michigan have struggled through a fairly dry summer, most markets are doing well.

Amanda Shreve is the executive director of the Michigan farmers market association.

“Farmers markets continue to be great places for community members to access fresh, healthy, locally grown foods. Some of the trends in farmers markets include programs related to food access, making sure that farmers markets are accessible to all community members.”

Shreve said other market trends are programs that partner markets with healthcare providers to prescribe patients with fresh foods.

She said as many as six-thousand farmers in Michigan sell directly to consumers, and most of them sell through farmers markets.
