Backers say a new plan unveiled Monday could reduce Michigan’s health care bill by up to 20 percent.
The legislative proposal calls for creating a single payer health care system in Michigan.
It would be funded by progressive income and business taxes, as well as federal money.
Eli Rubin is with the group “Michigan for Single Payer Healthcare”. He likes the plan, and he also likes the timing of its release.
“I’d say it’s first and foremost about August 7th.”
Rubin is referring to the August primary. He wants to show that Democrats who run on single payer can win their party’s nomination next month, and the general election in November.
The proposal will need more support from Democrats, since Michigan’s Republican controlled legislature is very unlikely to support single payer health care.
