Enbridge reduces pressure in Line 5 after divers discover marring

Enbridge Energy

Divers surveying power lines running beneath the Straits of Mackinac last week reported marring on the Line 5 pipeline.

On Friday Enbridge Energy reported they would be reducing the pressure in their lines, after consulting with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the state of Michigan.

An anchor strike earlier this month caused two lines owned by American Transmission Company to rupture, and early reports indicated that the Line 5 sustained three dents, but was otherwise unaffected.

In a written statement Enbridge officials said the reduced pressure was quote “a precautionary and prudent measure” and “the structural integrity of the pipes remains sound.

According to Enbridge, divers continue to inspect the pipe.
