The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is offering a free two-week supply of nicotine alternatives to help smokers kick the habit.
Lynn Sutfin is a spokesperson for the department. She said the state hopes the offer will motivate people who are interested in quitting tobacco.
“Quitting tobacco is a process. It can be very difficult for folks,” she said. “Being able to offer them these free supplies can probably help jumpstart them. It gives them that little push like, ‘Hey, maybe I can do this’ type of thing.”
Sutfin said for the free supplies, new enrollees have to be over 18-years-old. But she says the program helps tobacco users of any age.
“We’ve been working with more than 100-thousand people to help them quit tobacco.”
The quitline will offer the free supplies through May 31 to new enrollee who are 18-years or older and meet basic health requirements.
Anyone interested can call the Quitline at 800-Quit-Now. It’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
