Low level PFA’s detected in water supply for Saginaw, Bay CIty, and Midland

Low levels of the chemical PFA has been found in the water supply for roughly 260-thousand people in mid-Michigan.

PFA’s were found at roughly 10 parts per trillion in the water supply of the Saginaw-Midland Municipal Water Supply Corporation - which serves Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw. The federal action level is at 70 parts per trillion.

Joe Sova is the Utilities Director for the City of Midland. He said the low levels are not a cause for concern.

“These are not a health issue at all and it is possible that the testing method itself are responsible for these numbers, not necessarily the sample of the water.”

Sova said the P-F-A’s were detected within the margin of error and might not even be there.

He said PFAs are a growing area of concern.

“This is going to be a national issue and it’s not going to go away but I think it’s important for our customers to know that this is not an actionable level at all.”

Sova said the state has recommended regular testing to keep track of the PFA levels. But, he said, those tests are expensive.
