The Natural Resource Commission is considering a number of recommendations to combat the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in Michigan.

A state-appointed workgroup gave a list of recommendations at a Natural Resources Commision meeting January 11th.

Recommendations include coordinating with other states, improving communication with hunters, and developing a science-based management plan.

Ed Golder is with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He said the state is hopeful it can keep CWD, which has decimated deer populations in surrounding states, under control.

“Our scientists will tell you that some states have done better than others and we will be looking at those states that have been more successful in determining what our management practices will be.”

Golder said the recommendations expand on steps the state has already taken.

“We have been doing deer management and we’ve been doing it very aggressively and very well. So there’s nothing wrong with our current efforts it’s just a recognition that we need to continue to address this on a statewide basis.”

Golder said the Natural Resource Commission will consider its next steps and create a list of recommendations this summer.
