The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking comment on its five year plan for managing the state’s fisheries.
The plan has five primary goals, which include creating sustainable fisheries, boosting public education, developing partnerships, streamlining the organization, and creating strong assessments for success.
Elyse Walter is with the Michigan DNR. She said the plan is not a complete rewrite of previous fisheries plan.
“We took the successes and the things that worked really well and expanded or enhanced them for this next five year plan and we eliminated or removed certain portions of the plan that weren’t necessarily our priority for the next couple of years.”
Walter said the plan is currently open for public comment.
“Those within our community of people who care about our world-class fisheries here in Michigan can weigh in and see if we’re on the right track, if we’re missing something dramatic, if there seems to be gaps that we need to address this time period will allow them to make those thoughts be known.”
The plan will outline the state’s goals for its fisheries from 2018 to 2022.
