For the next three months, drivers should be extra cautious of deer running into the road.

A new report from State Farm found Michigan ranks ninth nationally for deer-related collisions.

Angie Harrier is with State Farm. She said deer are more active during mating season and, as daylight hours shift, humans and deer are increasingly out on the road at similar times.

“If you were to look at just Michigan and you were to look at October, November, and December that makes up about half of the deer car crashes we see in this state. The other months would cover the other 50% so it definitely goes up quite a bit these three months.”

Harrier said the average auto insurance claim from deer related accidents is four thousand dollars, and drivers should be cautious.

“When you’re traveling around dawn and dusk make sure that you’re aware that deer could be jumping out. The other one is that deer travel in herds so if you see one there is probably more behind it. Having an awareness of your surroundings, especially this time of year.”

Harrier said October, November, and December are peak deer collision months across the country.
