A presentation is being held in Leelanau tomorrow to educate residents on septic systems within the county.

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will be hosting the presentation, alongside Leelanau Clean Water.

The presentation is meant to educate local residents on the dangers of the state’s lack of regulations on septic systems.

Ann McInnis is a co chair of the energy and natural resources committee of the League of Women Voters in Leelanau County.

“Probably one of the things that has triggered this presentation is the fact that apparently there have been documented leaking septic systems and we’re very concerned about our water quality and the health implications of that.”

McInnis said there are few regulations that require inspections of septic systems in Michigan, and it has the potential to cause major health concerns.

“I think there was even another study that was pointed out that in all the rivers that had been tested the creeks had been tested in Michigan, none of them were without some trace of e coli.”

McInnis said the hope is also to get some ideas from residents on how to take the right steps in resolving the issue.

The presentation is scheduled for September 13th at noon at the Leelanau County Government Center, Lower Level. More information can be found at the League of Women Voters Leelanau County website.
