June floods in central Michigan hit a number of mid Michigan counties. Now a number of organizations are offering legal help to those in need.

Services include help with insurance claims, home repair contracts, replacement of destroyed legal documents, and counseling on landlord problems.

Amy Krieg is the Michigan district representative for the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.

“Toll-free 1800 number that persons affected by the disaster can call into to receive free legal services if they’re in the affected counties which is the four counties of Bay, Gladwin, Isabella, and Midland counties.”

Krieg said services like this have been offered before in the aftermath of local disasters.

“The last time the legal services hotline was used was in Detroit when those floodings occurred I think it was around 2014. It was a FEMA declared disaster that included a hotline in Detroit to respond to that disaster and provide free legal services.”

The free service is a partnership between the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the State Bar of Michigan, the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section, Lakeshore Legal Aid, and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan.

Flood victims facing legal issues that can’t afford a lawyer can call the hotline at 1-800-418-8315 between 9am and 5pm Monday through Thursday and 9am to 3pm Friday.
