With summer travel underway, the publisher of a resource guide for dog-lovers-who-like-to-travel is offering tips on how to bring your four-legged friend along.

Beth Mitchell is the owner and publishers of Michigan’s Canine Resource Guide. She said summer events and festivals in Michigan are becoming more dog friendly, and events meant for dogs are becoming more popular as well.

“A lot more restaurants and public places are allowing dogs which is great, people enjoy bringing their dogs and they’re a part of their family and it’s good for the dogs to socialize with other people and other dogs, but it’s just important to remember to be respectful and safe while you’re attending those events.”

Mitchell said it is important for owners to understand their dog and know what the animal can handle in terms of crowds and settings.

She said owners should research an event before attending to see how dog friendly it is and what supplies they may need to bring.

“The important thing is to remember to make your dog comfortable at the event and have plenty of water, and how your dog interacts with children or other people who might come in contact with the dog and having the dog interact with other dogs at an event.”

Mitchell said she started writing the guide about two years ago.

It includes a calendar of pet-friendly events around Michigan and  tips for owners who bring plan to bring their dog to an event.
