National Guard tests residential wells in Grayling for harmful chemicals

The National Guard is testing residential wells in Grayling for toxic chemicals that may have leaked from the Camp Grayling National Guard base.

Jenine Taylor is with the local Health Department. She said a preliminary test of wells on the base found high levels of a chemical used in firefighting foams.

“The national guard base there at Camp Grayling took a proactive stance to test some wells after nation wide some national guard bases were finding levels of PPC in some of the water.”

Now the National Guard wants to know how far the toxic plume extends.

The Guard  held a town hall May 19 explaining the potential danger to residents.

“They don’t know if it’s going to be an issue. Everything is very, very preliminary. As far as how large a plume is they are at very early stages of knowing what’s happening there.”

Taylor said 100 wells are being tested near Camp Grayling in addition to several other wells that are being tested after residents filed requests at the town hall meeting.

The tests are intended to determine where the chemical - which is suspected to come from firefighting foams used on the base - has traveled.

The Health Department expects test results sometime in late June or early July.

Taylor said, in the meantime, residents have alternative places to fill up water if they are worried about drinking directly from their wells.
