State awards grants to improve recycling

$500,000 in recycling grants were awarded to 27 communities throughout Michigan on Wednesday, to improve recycling services.

The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments for Alpena Recycling Board received 50-thousand dollars.

Brad Mousseau is a supervisor at the recycling resource facility.

He said the money will be used for new equipment.

“We’ll be using it to get a new all purpose baler, to take everything we accept, cardboard, paper, plastic, and metal, and bale it up and one contraption will be a lot more efficient for us,” said Mousseau. “We’re real happy that the state accepted us, and we’re hoping to get the job done a lot more faster and efficient now.”

Last year, Alpena County shipped 750 tons of recyclables.

Kalkaska, Isabella and Tuscola counties also received grant funding for their recycling programs.
